As archivists we spend months, sometimes years, poring over the notes, sketches, and fragments of someone else’s past life and work. We come to know them and appreciate who they are without ever meeting face to face. It’s an extraordinary gift and opportunity, and one of the reasons I love what I do.
Last night I had the chance to cross that threshold and meet the artist I’ve spent the past year focusing all my attention and efforts on: the incomparable Edward Ruscha. As you can see from my beaming expression, I was pretty thrilled with this opportunity. I recognize it as a special one, and will cherish that memory and the few words we exchanged. I left with the impression that both him and his studio assistant appreciated my efforts and considered it a job well done. What more really can you ask for.
